Nancy Baym describes communicative or expressive content as platform-specific ways in which content is shared (Baym, 17). A platform analysis of Quora, a Q & A communicative platform that allows people to share and grow their knowledge, offers its users to post and share question-based discussion threads that drive its communicative purposes. People come to Quora to ask questions about any subject, read and learn from the personalized high-quality knowledge, and share their knowledge with others. Newspaper article “Does Quora Have All the Answers? from wired deems Quora consists of communicative content that includes much more than casual conversation. “The amount of knowledge that has been poured into the site is phenomenal. Users ask questions about raising capital, or about booting a cofounder who fails to pull his weight, and almost immediately a discussion sprouts up among seasoned engineers, investors, and CEOs” (Rivlin, 2011). Quora’s communicative content is what people come to when they want to better understand what the world has to offer. Furthermore, Quora users engage with its content in several ways. “Using keywords, you can find questions that others have already posed or choose topics to follow so that the site can begin serving up queries more suited to your interests. You can also start following people. That way the questions they ask, answer, and follow will show up in your feed” (Rivlin, 2011). Users can either vote up helpful along with authentic posts or vote down those that aren’t where the most upvotes are highlighted and viewed the most. All in all, by posting and engaging with Quora’s content, users can learn from credible people with first-hand knowledge as well as share knowledge with the world by answering questions and engaging in communicative content.
